Austrian mobile operator A1 starts accepting cryptocurrencies

The large Austrian telecommunications company A1 plans to use cryptocurrency as a means of payment. The mobile operator will accept several digital currencies, including Litecoin, Dash, Ethereum, Ripple and Stellar.

At this stage, A1 is conducting a pilot project to receive digital currencies in seven stores throughout Austria:

“In these stores, cash has been removed from circulation. Through these pilot operations, we are testing the demand for the use of digital currencies in Austria, ”said Markus Schreiber, Head of Marketing, A1, to the local publication.

In addition to digital currencies, a pilot project will support payments through Alipay and WeChat Pay until the end of August.

Cryptocurrency payment services will not be limited to serving Austrian citizens; any tourist can make such transactions.

A1 is the main mobile operator in Austria. Founded in 1881, the company serves 5.1 million users, as well as 2.1 million fixed-line subscribers throughout the country.

As part of the cryptocurrency acceptance initiative, the mobile company has entered into partnership agreements with several banking solution providers – Salamantex, Ingenico and Concardis.
