The shocking figure of 146 billion cups of coffee, which are annually thrown into the trash by lovers of this flavored drink in the United States alone, has forced environmental scientists to develop new measures to “save civilization.” And it is not surprising, because most of these cups contain a polyethylene gasket, for which natural processing takes centuries. Earlier, initiatives like “Keep Cup” or “Good to Go” were created, aimed at reducing paper waste through special reusable cups that you can not only buy, but even rent.

Now Reduce.Reuse.Grow has developed another eco-friendly option – the Plantable Coffee Cup – a 100% biodegradable paper cup in which the seeds of native plants are “imprinted”. It is assumed that after using the cup, you can simply throw it on the ground, thereby helping local gardening.

The Plantable Coffee Cup is a coffee container and a bag of seeds in one! It is made from recycled materials – recycled paper from local recycling centers in California. The impregnation technology already known to the world is used for imprinting seeds into paper. On the back of the cup printed full description of the used seeds and instructions for planting. Following this instruction, the user can make his own contribution to the greening of the area, improving the urban or rural landscape.

In order to plant such a cup, it is necessary after use to soak it for 5 minutes in plain water. This time is enough for the paper to be completely soaked. Then using garden tools to bury the seeds at a shallow depth in the place you like, in a word, everything is as usual.
If the gardener’s role is not to their liking, there is an alternative option – the user should simply throw the Plantable Coffee Cup to the ground, and after 180 days it will completely decompose, giving the “food” to the already growing plants. In the process of decomposition into the soil fall and the seeds, which are due to the same nutrients quickly germinate.

The cost price of each such cup is only $ 0.02 – the same amount as a regular biodegradable cup, already available in the US. So far, Reduce.Reuse.Grow products are available only in California, but the company plans to supply Plantable Coffee Cup to all eco-conscious coffee shops in the world, thereby giving people a chance to stop deforestation.
