The upcoming new Sony PlayStation 5 has already forced to talk about yourself. In general, the launch of the new PlayStation models always causes a decent buzz. However, this time, Sony may make changes to its business strategy, shifting reference points to hardcore gamers.
Sony’s strategy change will occur in the pricing policy, as the Japanese technology giant plans to charge a price of $ 800 for the PlayStation 5.
Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter during a talk show with Jeff Kaylee noted that this huge price increase is inexplicable and could adversely affect Sony’s cash cow, that is, the PlayStation.
Of course, along with the release of the PlayStation 5, Sony will introduce high-end hardware and ultra-fast graphics rendering speed. Thus, instead of focusing on a wide audience that is interested in democratic prices, Sony can focus on games with large budgets, thereby increasing profitability.
According to WSJ, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida should present the PlayStation 5 as a niche product, in the future console of which powerful ray-tracing technology will be placed to provide a realistic optical effect in games.
Such a decision by Sony has caused experts to doubt that the company is taking the right step, because Sony’s last-year financial revenues, which grew by 19%, are backed by growing subscriptions to the PlayStation Plus. The company’s total revenue was $ 21 billion, operating profit – $ 3 billion.
Video game explorer Newzoo, who divided gamers into eight categories, believes that hardcore gamers no longer have a large player base, which could be a big problem for Sony.
Only a third of the total number of players belongs to the category of hardcore, that is, those who are willing to spend big money on hardware.
On the other hand, a whopping 46% of gamers fall into the categories of “cloud gamers” and “gamers occupying themselves.” “Cloud gamers” are more prone to streaming services and do not want to spend a lot of money on equipment. Gamers who “occupy themselves for a while” are non-regular players with other hobbies.
These two categories make a huge contribution to the ratings of global gamers, and their absence in the ecosystem can turn into a big adventure.
